Initially founded in 2018 as the pioneer for zero waste travel to national parks around Indonesia, Sebumi evolved along the time to become a platform which focuses on 3 pillars: Educate, Experience and Adopt, with the ultimate goal to enable sustainable lifestyle for Indonesian.
At Sebumi, we operate with conservation and sustainability principles at our core. Conservation for us is a balanced way of living with nature that will enable ecosystem, biodiversity and people to flourish and sustain to keep thriving for generations to come.
We were drawn to get involved in conservation activities knowing full well that from 2001 to 2020, Indonesia lost 27.7Mha of tree cover, 17% of our forest which is equivalent to 19.0GT of COâ‚‚e emissions. Due to climate change, sea level rise in Indonesia is projected at a 5 mm/year rate, where a rise of 40 cm by 2100. In addition to that, Indonesia’s National Plastic Action Partnership estimates that only 10 percent of Indonesia’s yearly 6.8 million tons of plastic waste is recycled and nearly half is dumped or burned. Indonesia is responsible for 10 percent of global plastic leakage into the ocean, second only behind China. This is such a misfortune because according to Conservation International, Indonesia is considered to be one of the 17 “megadiverse” countries, with 2 of the world’s 25 “hotspots”, 18 World Wildlife Fund’s “Global 200” ecoregions and 24 of Bird Life International’s “Endemic Bird Areas”. That's when we knew we had to take actions because we believe changes always start from ourselves.
Within just 4 years, we have offset 397,5 tons of carbons by planting 1.520 trees, actively educating on conservation and sustainabilty to over 9.280 people. We also nurtured and started to develop 10 communities across Indonesia and raised IDR 135mio for various social and conservation activities in these areas.
